Peridot

The August birthstone is an exquisite yellow-ish green gem called Peridot. Often confused with Emerald or Topaz, this has an incredible history. The origin of the word,  “Peridot” is derived from Arabic “faridat,” which means “gem.” The mineral Olivine is the gem variety this particular gemstone encompasses.

The stone has been relevant for centuries, with the Egyptians calling it the “gem of the sun.” Today, mined peridot is sourced from deep inside the earth, as they are produced by volcanoes and high heat. In today’s culture, it is the gemstone that marks the celebration of the 15th year anniversary. Peridot gems are commonly sourced from China, Myanmar, Pakistan, Vietnam, and the United States.

Notably, the stones have been found in unique places such as Peridot Beach, Hawaii.  In some mystical and rare occurrences, some of these gemstones also came to earth in meteorites. But these are not likely to be found in retail jewelry, as they are extremely rare.  These particular Peridot specimens have been dated back as far as 4.5 billion years, making it one of the oldest known gems in history.

Zabargad, an Egyptian Island is the oldest recorded source of producing Peridot. Because of its unique and ancient origins, Peridot from the island of Zabargad has been highly desired for centuries.

To best care for a Peridot, it is not meant for daily wear, since it ranks a 6.5 - 7 on the Mohs Hardness scale. The stone is vulnerable to thermal shock, so handwashing is the best way to clean the stone.
