Let's talk about non-traditional engagement rings. You see them everywhere, from J. Lo's green diamond to Kate Middleton's rich blue sapphire. You've browsed online at pretty aquamarines, deep red rubies, and green emeralds, and it's all stunning – but is it all practical? Will the gemstone last? Is it too trendy?

First, let's talk gems and jewels.

It's your engagement ring; you'll be wearing it a LOT – you'll want to choose a gemstone that can handle daily wear without cracking or breaking, so look for a stone that ranks high on the MOH's hardness scale. For example, a diamond is a ten on the scale, meaning it's the hardest stone; sapphires and rubies are a 9, making them a perfect alternative to a diamond – they also come in a wide variety of cuts and colors, like velvety blues and soft yellow's, mystical greens, and summery pinks to name a few!

Diamonds and sapphires are followed by Topaz (an eight on the scale) and Emeralds at a 7 – a bezel or low-profile setting will help keep these beauties safe and sparkling for a lifetime. However, you'll still want to be careful with the care and keeping of these gemstones, especially in an everyday engagement ring.

From there, you'll find a variety of other softer, more delicate gems like Moonstone, Opals, and Pearls, all ranking at a six and below, meaning that while these make beautiful rings, they're best as a cocktail or fashion ring. Check out our favorite Mikimoto pearl pieces here if you're in the mood for a killer cocktail ring.

In keeping with non-traditional, let's talk stacking bands.

You can build an exceptional (and practical!) wedding set with a mix of bands; the best part is you can make it unique. We have a vast selection of bands, and nearly every band we offer is customizable for diamond/gem size, metal color, and carat weight. Stack a pave set band with a solid gold one or an emerald cut with a traditional round - for example:

Commonly known as the "Toi et Moi" setting – made famous by celebrities like Emily Ratajkowski and Megan Fox, this style has been trendy because of the endless combination of gemstones and cuts you can use. Make it modern with bezels, like the one below with a pear diamond and a pink sapphire, or keep it even with two of the same shapes, like an emerald and diamond.

If more is more for you, consider a three-stone version. For the indecisive ones in the room, this is the ultimate stacking move – mix it up by adding a green diamond, or make it unique by hand-selecting a gradient of blue sapphires!

And finally, an absolute favorite of ours, let's explore signets!

The signet ring has a rich history. Choose a timeless, all-gold look (ask about different finishes and textures on the gold!), or personalize it with a gemstone, like these rings that were made in-house

Gemstones, signets, and bands are the perfect place to start when you're browsing non-traditional styles. Don't be afraid to try styles and colors you aren't used to – your engagement ring should tell your story, so make it all about you!

When it comes to customizations and ring design, we have experts on board to guide you through the entire process. Our GIA and AGS-certified team will work with you on your price range, setting style, finishes, and gem selections to help create your dream ring – how un-traditional it may be!
