The Nature of Time

Precision Born in Japan

Since 1960, Grand Seiko has pursued the ideal watch through Japanese craftsmanship and in-house innovation. At Skeie's Jewelers, we're proud to bring these exceptional timepieces to Eugene, Oregon.

Heritage

Grand Seiko was born with a singular purpose: to create watches of such precision and quality they could stand with the finest in the world. The first Grand Seiko, powered by Caliber 3180, was Japan's first chronometer-grade timepiece.

By 1967, Grand Seiko placed 2nd and 3rd at the Neuchâtel Observatory Competition. The following year at Geneva, their movements took 4th through 10th place in the mechanical wristwatch category.

Manufacture

Every Grand Seiko is crafted at one of two dedicated studios in Japan. Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi in Iwate Prefecture produces all mechanical movements. Shinshu Watch Studio in Nagano creates Spring Drive and quartz calibers.

Both are among the world's few fully integrated manufactures, producing movements, cases, dials, and hands entirely in-house. Each watch is assembled by a single master watchmaker.

Spring Drive

Conceived in 1977 by engineer Yoshikazu Akahane, Spring Drive took over 20 years and 600 prototypes to perfect. The result: a movement powered by a mainspring, yet regulated by a quartz oscillator for accuracy of ±1 second per day.

The Tri-synchro Regulator harmonizes mechanical, electrical, and electromagnetic energy, creating the signature sweeping seconds hand that moves in perfect silence.

Zaratsu Polishing

The Grand Seiko Style demands perfectly flat, distortion-free surfaces with razor-sharp edges. This is achieved through Zaratsu polishing, where craftspeople press the case against the front of a rotating disc.

Mastering the pressure, angle, and timing takes months of training. The result is a mirror finish that creates what Grand Seiko calls the "sparkle of quality."
