The Skeie's Difference
The Grand Seiko Evolution 9 SLGH033 brings a new expression to one of Grand Seiko’s most recognizable dial designs. Its richly textured green dial is inspired by the white birch forests surrounding the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi in Iwate Prefecture, where Grand Seiko’s mechanical watches are made. Layers of fresh green color filter through the deeply textured birch pattern, capturing the vitality of the forest rather than simply reproducing its appearance.
Inside is Grand Seiko’s advanced Hi-Beat Caliber 9SA5, operating at 36,000 vibrations per hour while still delivering approximately 80 hours of power reserve. The 40mm case and bracelet are crafted from Ever-Brilliant Steel, an alloy chosen for its brighter white appearance and exceptional resistance to corrosion.
The Skeie’s Perspective
This is one of those Grand Seikos where the dial will probably get someone to pick it up, but the movement is what makes the watch truly special.
The green treatment completely changes the personality of Grand Seiko’s White Birch pattern. Instead of the cooler, almost wintry feeling associated with the original, the SLGH033 feels alive. The texture creates the impression of vertical birch trunks while the nuanced greens suggest foliage and filtered light.
Then there is the 9SA5. A 36,000-vph movement traditionally asks you to compromise on power reserve, but Grand Seiko’s Dual Impulse Escapement and twin barrels allow this watch to run for approximately 80 hours when fully wound.
Inspired by the White Birch Forests of Shizukuishi
Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi sits near extensive white birch forests in Iwate Prefecture. For the SLGH033, Grand Seiko builds upon its established White Birch Pattern, using an intricate stamped texture and layered green coloring to evoke fresh foliage filtering through the tall white trunks.
I think that story is important for Skeie’s page because “green dial” doesn't really explain this watch. This isn't simply a green colorway—the dial is specifically intended to express the life and depth of the landscape surrounding the studio where its mechanical movement is produced.
