Why Consider Redesigning an Heirloom?

Whether you're looking to redesign your grandmother's ring, modernize old jewelry, or repurpose inherited jewelry into something you'll wear every day, our design team will work closely with you to explore possibilities that honor the original piece while creating something uniquely your own. From subtle updates to complete jewelry reworks, we'll help transform treasured heirlooms into designs that can be loved for generations to come.

Reimagining the Design Of Your Inherited Jewelry

For more than 100 years, Skeie's Jewelers has helped families throughout Eugene preserve their stories through custom jewelry design and heirloom jewelry redesign. As a family-owned business spanning four generations, we understand that inherited jewelry is more than precious metals and gemstones—it's a connection to the people and memories that matter most.

Craftsmanship Meets Heritage

Every detail from setting style to the finishing touches will be done thoughtfully and purposely to ensure that your reimagined piece will continue to stand the test of time. What truly sets Skeie's apart is the talented team behind every piece. Our expert design team includes five in-house goldsmiths and a gemologist who work together to create custom jewelry that is both beautiful and meaningful. Unlike many jewelers who outsource their work, much of our design, repair, and custom craftsmanship is completed right here in-house. This hands-on approach allows us to maintain exceptional quality, offer greater customization, and create one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect the individuality of each customer. It's a level of craftsmanship and personal service that is increasingly rare, especially within our local market.

The Heirloom Redesign Process: Step by Step

Step One: Consultation & Sharing the Story

The first step of redesigning your inherited jewelry is to meet with our expert design team by scheduling a consultation. During the consultation we want to learn about what your piece of inherited jewelry means to you. Tell us the story of why it is special, these details will help us help you in the redesigning process.

Step Two: Evaluating the Original Piece

Next, we carefully examine the inherited jewelry to determine which elements can be incorporated into the new design. We assess the condition of gemstones, diamonds, and precious metals, identifying opportunities to preserve original materials whenever possible. Whether you're wondering if diamonds can be reset from old jewelry or what can be reused from an antique ring, this evaluation provides the foundation for the redesign process.

Step Three: Exploring Design Options

With a clear understanding of your goals and the available materials, we begin developing design concepts. This stage allows you to explore possibilities ranging from subtle modernizations to complete transformations. Whether you're looking to redesign your grandmother's ring into a contemporary engagement ring or repurpose inherited jewelry into a new everyday piece, we'll guide you through options that balance sentiment, beauty, and wearability.

Step Four: CAD Rendering of New Design

Once a direction is selected, we create a detailed CAD (Computer-Aided Design) rendering of your new piece. These digital models allow you to see the proportions, stone placement, and overall design before production begins. CAD renderings provide an opportunity to make refinements and ensure every detail aligns with your vision, giving you confidence in the final design before any materials are used.

Step Five: Approval & Material Use Plan

Before crafting begins, we review the final design together and confirm how existing gemstones and metals will be incorporated. You'll receive a clear plan outlining which heirloom elements will be reused, which materials may need to be added, and any recommendations for preserving original components. This approval stage ensures complete transparency and peace of mind before the transformation moves forward.

Step Six: Crafting the New Piece

Our master jewelers bring the design to life using a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques. Existing diamonds and gemstones are carefully reset, new settings are fabricated, and every detail is refined to the highest standards. Throughout the process, special attention is given to protecting and honoring the heirloom materials that make the piece unique and meaningful.

Step Seven: Delivery & Story Preservation

The final step is presenting your newly redesigned heirloom jewelry. What was once tucked away in a jewelry box becomes a piece that can be worn, celebrated, and passed down again. Along with your finished jewelry, we encourage preserving the story behind the original piece and its transformation, creating a lasting connection between generations and ensuring its legacy continues for years to come.

If you have inherited jewelry from someone special in your life that doesn't match your style, it doesn't have to sit in your jewelry box. Redesigning offers a new life to your jewelry and leaves you with a piece you can cherish. Redesigning an heirloom may also be the best option to address and fix any damage your piece may have sustained overtime. You may also wish to combine multiple heirloom jewelry to create one beautiful unified piece, or simply modernize jewelry you have inherited. The options are truly endless and we would love to explore them with you.

What to Bring to Your Heirloom Consultation

To make the most of your consultation, we recommend bringing:

  1. The heirloom jewelry piece(s) you'd like evaluated for redesign.
  2. Any additional inherited jewelry that may contain stones or materials you'd like to incorporate.
  3. Photos of designs you love, including rings, necklaces, earrings, or other jewelry styles that inspire you.
  4. A list of must-keep elements, such as specific diamonds, gemstones, engravings, or design details.
  5. Information about the jewelry's history, if known, so we can better understand its sentimental significance.
  6. Your budget range, which helps guide design recommendations and material options.
  7. Questions and ideas about how you'd like to modernize, repurpose, or transform the piece.

Bringing these items helps us develop a redesign plan that honors the story behind your heirloom while creating a piece you'll love wearing for years to come.

Skeie's has be redesigning jewelry in Oregon for over 100 years. We are so excited to meet with you, and help bring your transformation to life.

Why choose Skeie's for heirloom jewelry redesign?

For over 100 years, Skeie's Jewelers has helped families throughout Eugene preserve and reimagine treasured heirlooms. As a family-owned business spanning four generations, we understand the importance of honoring your family's story while creating something new for future generations.

What can be reworked into a into something new?

Many heirloom pieces can be transformed into something new, including rings, earrings, pendants, brooches, and loose diamonds or gemstones. Every piece must be evaluated individually, as not all stones or materials are suitable for reuse.

Commonly reusable elements include:

  • Center diamonds
  • Larger gemstones
  • Select accent stones (depending on condition)
  • Engravings or sentimental design details

Smaller accent stones may be too worn or fragile to safely remove and reset. While diamonds and gemstones can often be incorporated into a new design, precious metals cannot be melted and reused directly due to alloy composition and must first be processed through a refinery. During your consultation, we'll determine which elements can be preserved and incorporated into your redesigned piece.

What if I don't know exactly what I want?

That's perfectly normal. Many clients begin with a treasured heirloom but aren't sure how they want it transformed. During your consultation, we'll discuss your style, lifestyle, and goals, then present design ideas that help bring your vision to life.

Can heirloom jewelry be turned into an engagement ring?

Yes. One of the most popular heirloom jewelry redesign projects is transforming a family diamond or gemstone into a custom engagement ring that carries both personal style and family history.

Will my redesigned jewelry still feel like the original piece?

Our goal is to preserve the story and sentimental value of your heirloom while creating a design that better fits your style and lifestyle today.

How much does an heirloom rework cost?

The cost of an heirloom jewelry redesign depends on several factors, including the complexity of the new design, the condition of the existing materials, the market price of the material, the number of stones being reset, and whether additional gemstones are needed. Simple redesigns that use most of the original materials typically cost less than fully custom creations requiring extensive fabrication. During your consultation, we'll evaluate your heirloom piece, discuss your goals, and provide a detailed estimate before any work begins. Our goal is to create a meaningful piece that fits both your vision and your budget.

How long does an heirloom rework take?

Most heirloom jewelry redesign projects take approximately 6–8 weeks from consultation to completion, although timelines vary depending on design complexity and the availability of materials. The process includes consultation, design development, CAD rendering, approvals, production, stone setting, and final quality inspections. More intricate projects or those requiring specialty gemstones may take additional time. We keep you informed throughout the process so you always know the status of your piece and when to expect delivery.
