The Seiko Prospex Marinemaster HBF001 brings one of the most important designs in Seiko diving history into the modern Marinemaster collection. Inspired by Seiko’s groundbreaking 1968 300-meter diver, the HBF001 retains the flowing case silhouette and signature 4 o’clock crown while introducing Seiko’s high-performance Caliber 8L45 automatic movement.

A finely textured deep black dial is designed to minimize reflected light, while beveled indexes, LumiBrite and a glossy ceramic bezel deliver strong visibility. At 42.6mm, this is unmistakably a serious dive watch, but the refined case finishing and heritage-driven proportions give it a level of sophistication that separates the Marinemaster from the rest of the Prospex lineup.

Key Features

  • Seiko Prospex Marinemaster

  • 42.6mm stainless steel case
  • Deep black, fine-textured dial
  • Scratch-resistant ceramic bezel insert
  • Dual-curved sapphire crystal with inner anti-reflective coating
  • 300-meter / 1,000-foot diver’s water resistance
  • Newly developed adjustable bracelet clasp
  • Reference HBF001J1

The Skeie’s Perspective

This is an important watch for anyone who understands where Seiko sits in the history of the modern dive watch. The HBF001 isn’t simply another Prospex diver—it sits within Marinemaster, Seiko’s flagship diver series, and its design traces directly back to the landmark 1968 professional diver.

What makes this one especially compelling to us is the combination of purpose and finishing. You still get the unmistakable tool-watch elements—300-meter water resistance, a ceramic timing bezel, serious LumiBrite and a screw-down crown—but the dial texture, case finishing and upgraded movement make it feel substantially more elevated on the wrist.

The 1968 Heritage

In 1968, Seiko introduced Japan’s first 300-meter water-resistant diver’s watch, following the company’s first diver introduced in 1965. The HBF001 draws directly from that historic model, preserving its distinctive flowing silhouette and crown positioned at 4 o’clock.

The black dial has a fine-grain surface engineered to reduce reflected light, while the beveled index edges are designed to catch available light from different angles. The result is a dial that references the past without feeling like a simple reproduction.

Caliber 8L45 — Built for Marinemaster

Inside is Seiko’s Caliber 8L45, a 35-jewel mechanical movement operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour. Seiko revised the mainspring and accuracy adjustment for this caliber, resulting in approximately 72 hours of power reserve and a stated accuracy of -5 to +10 seconds per day—which Seiko describes as the highest accuracy among its current mechanical movements.

A Better Bracelet for a Serious Diver

Seiko also developed a new clasp for this generation of Marinemaster. Its slide-adjustment system provides up to 16mm of adjustment in 2mm increments, allowing the bracelet to be fine-tuned without sacrificing the clean appearance of the clasp
