The August birthstone is an exquisite green gem called a Peridot. Often confused with Emerald or Topaz, the Peridot has a naturally bright, yellow-green color and an incredible history.
The origin of the word “Peridot” is derived from Arabic “faridat,” which means “gem.”
Even so, the Egyptians called it the “gem of the sun.” Today, mined peridot, is sourced from deep inside the earth produced by volcanoes. Peridot gems are commonly sourced from China, Myanmar, Pakistan, Vietnam and the United States.
However, others have been found in places such as Peridot Beach, Hawaii. In some mystical and rare occurrences, some also came to earth in meteorites. But these are not likely to be found in retail jewelry. Zabargad, an Egyptian Island is the oldest recorded source of producing Peridot.
Because of its unique and ancient origins, Peridot from the island of Zabargad has been highly desired for centuries.
